Dogs have always been known as man's best friend and it is easy to see why. They are lovable and loyal companions and no matter what, they are always excited to be around you. There are so many types of breeds that all have their historical information and what their various strengths are. Not only are dogs a nice companion to have, but they are very helpful in specific jobs too and can be much smarter than you may ever think. The first area where dogs known as the K9 unit are used quite a bit are in the police department. Quite a bit of training is done for these dogs to assist officers in various duties. USually, they are used to go in and track down a criminal after they have escaped the crime area by using their great sense of smell. They can also been used to scare someone and if needed, run after and attack a criminal who may have been on the run.

Another job our beloved dogs are doing is to help a person that may have some kind of disability or illness. For many years, dogs have been trained to help blind or deaf people by leading them around by a short leash or harness through the various obstacles of life. Today, they are trained to assist those with physical limitations and may not be able to use their limbs by getting whatever they may need and bringing it to them. Many dogs have been trained to make a phone call for their owner. Other dogs are now trained to detect an upcoming seizure in those that suffer from epilepsy and warn their family members. In this type of work, these dogs are absolute lifesavers.

The final type of work many dogs do is to assist farmers or ranchers with the livestock they may have. These herding dogs like Australian shepherds or border collies have a natural ability to herd sheep, cattle or other animals for the rancher or farmer to get them to a different location.
